Events confined to the 60th anniversary of the worlds nuclear power generation industry were held in Ankara

A photo exhibition, organized with the support of the State Atomic Energy Corporation "Rosatom" and Rossotrudnichestvo, opened in the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, Ankara (Turkey), welcomes the visitors. It is dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the world's nuclear power generation industry. The event was attended by the Russian Ambassador in Turkey Andrey Karlov, Director of Communications Department of the State Corporation "Rosatom" Sergei Novikov, representative of the State Corporation "Rosatom" in Turkey Sergei Tamaev, Deputy General Director of AKKUYU NPP JSC Project Company Rauf Kasumov, representative of Rossotrudnichestvo in Turkey Natig Guliyev. Teachers of the Middle East Technical University, Hacettepe University, as well as the personnel and students of higher education institutions of Turkey were invited to the official opening of the photo exhibition.

The world's first nuclear power plant was commissioned in the Soviet Union in 1954 in the city of Obninsk (Kaluga region). Startup of the world's first nuclear power plant is of historical significance, comparable to man-in-space flight. Obninsk plant with the capacity of only 5 MW had successfully operated for 48 years. As of today, the plant was transformed to the museum, which is visited by delegations from around the world.

State Corporation "Rosatom" will perform construction of Turkey's first nuclear power plant in Mersin province on the basis of Intergovernmental agreement, signed on May 12, 2010. Construction project provides four power generating units with the capacity of 1.200 MW each. After completion of construction Akkuyu NPP is expected to generate about 35 billion kWh per year. Construction of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey is conducted under the conditions of ВОО model ("build - own - operate").

Director of Communications Department of the State Corporation "Rosatom" Sergei Novikov spoke at the official opening of the exhibition. "We implement projects in many countries around the world. The State Corporation uses the most modern and advanced technologies in the sphere of nuclear engineering, both in Russia and abroad. Our main goal within Akkuyu NPP construction project is extraction of economic profit for the citizens of the Republic of Turkey. Nuclear plant will make it possible to produce the required amount of electricity, needed by a dynamically developing country. It should be pointed out that after implementation of NPP stress-tests Russian plants were recognized by the international experts to be the safest. Technology used in the project of the first nuclear power plant in Turkey will meet all requirements and standards of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)" - said Sergei Novikov. Answering the journalists' questions, he announced the plans to open a new Nuclear Energy Public Information Center (PIC). "In the second half of May of this year we are planning to open Nuclear Energy Public Information Center in Istanbul with a multimedia teaching complex, designed to acquaint the public with nuclear energy. We have developed multimedia programs on such topics as "The road to the world of nuclear energy", "Construction of nuclear power plants" and some others. Visitors to the center will be able to familiarize themselves with educational games, watching the selected material on a panoramic screen as in a movie theater", - said the Director of Communications Department of the State Corporation "Rosatom". In addition, Sergei Novikov said that Public Information Centers in Hanoi (Vietnam), Mersin, Buyukedzheli (Turkey) were opened in 2012 outside Russia and in 2013 in Dhaka (Bangladesh). It is planned to open a Public Information Center in Belarus in 2014.
