Rosatom and AKKUYU NUCLEAR held a round table within the 5th International Nuclear Power Plants Summit in Istanbul

 

On March 06 Rosatom State Corporation and Project Company Akkuyu Nuclear JSC organized a round table conference titled “Russian expertise in nuclear energy” within the 5th International Nuclear Power Plants Summit INPPS-2018, which is taking place in Istanbul.

 

The Program of the round table presumes presentations of the representatives of Rosatom SC and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC and the spokespersons of the business communities of Finland and Hungary, where Rosatom is implementing construction projects of the modern design NPPs with VVER-1200 reactors of Generation III+. The reactors of such a type will be installed in Turkey.

 

Alexander Voronkov, Director, Rosatom Middle East and North Africa, told to the round table participants about the history of the State Corporation, state-of-the-art solutions and technologies as well as about largest projects being implemented at the international market and, particularly, in the region. The speaker underlined the historic character of relations between Russia and the Middle East countries in peaceful use of the nuclear energy, and emphasized the wide range of potential areas for cooperation: from projects in the area of nuclear fuel cycle and personnel training up to implementation of NPP projects and non-power projects (nuclear desalination, nuclear medicine, irradiation technologies etc.).

 

Evgeny Kozlov, Head of the Project Office of AKKUYU NUCLEAR of Rusatom Energy International Company (hereinafter REIN), in his presentation described the current status of the Akkuyu NPP project, the process of licensing and obtaining authorizations. The speaker highlighted the active development of the project over 2017 – beginning of 2018 and added that receiving of the key license for the NPP construction is scheduled for March 2018.

 

Konstantin Ryzhak, Managing Director of AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC, in his presentation told about the project’s beneficial effect on the Turkish economy as a whole and, in particular, on the economy of Mersin province, where construction of the first Turkish nuclear power plant is underway. According to his information, over the last decade the continuous growth of power consumption by 1-20GW is annually observed in Turkey. Such growth can be predicted for the future even in case of the minimal development rate. At the same time diversification of power sources thanks to commissioning of the NPP will provide for energy security of the country and produce a substantial economic and ecological effect. And Mersin province will receive a new infrastructure, new jobs and new opportunities for business.

Vladimir Chudin, Director for Equipment of AKKUYU NUCLEAR, and Kurshad Tosun, Director for Licensing and GR, introduced the audience to prospects for potential suppliers to become involved in the construction of Akkuyu NPP, and told about the plans of equipment acquisition for the project and procurement standards available in AKKUYU NUCLEAR.

At the Rosatom’ session the representatives of the business community of Hungary and Finland made their presentation, namely: Leena Julhä, Managing Director of FinNuclear Ltd, and Pál Kovács, representative of the Hungarian Government. The speech of Leena Julhä was dedicated to experience the Finish vendors have while cooperating with Rosatom under construction of Hanhikivi-1 NPP. In his turn, Pál Kovács quoted Paks NPP as an example to illustrate social and economic effects for the region resulted from construction of the NPP.

The 5th International Summit INPPS has gathered in Istanbul the leading representatives of the nuclear industry: key Turkish companies of the nuclear industry, national regulatory authority and relevant institutions. The forum is the largest matchmaking platform for dialogue between companies working in the nuclear industry. Rosatom State Corporation and AKKUYU NUCLEAR JSC are Platinum Sponsors of the Summit. At the exhibition display a participant can familiarize with the key facts about the State Corporation, Rosatom’s cutting-edge solutions in the realm of power and non-power projects, get detailed information about the Akkuyu NPP project and technologies of VVER-1200 reactors of Generation III+.

 

Under the business program of the Summit Turkish companies are negotiating about their potential involvement in the Akkuyu NPP project. Akkuyu Nuclear will have more than 20 business meetings of the B2B format within the two days of the Forum.

 

For reference:

Construction of the first Turkish Akkuyu NPP is being implemented under the Intergovernmental Agreement signed between the Russian Federation and Republic of Turkey on May 12, 2010. The project provides for 4 power units of 1200mW capacity each. AKKUYU NPP is a serial project of the nuclear power plant of Generation III+ on the basis of VVER-1200 project of Novovoronezh NPP2 (Russia, Vononezh Oblast). It is projected that upon completion AKKUYU NPP will annually generate around 35 bln. kWh.
