The territory of «Akkuyu» NPP got the status of the special security zone

 

«Akkuyu» NPP got the status of the special security zone of the construction site not far from Buyukedjeli of Mersin province of the Republic of Turkey. Such zones are established and liquidated by the Council of Ministers of Turkey on the suggestion of Main Directorate of the General Staff, Secretary General's Office of the National Security Council, as well as on the suggestion of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic.

 

In autumn 2012 the file was prepared with participation of the chiefs of the security authorities of Mersin province and representatives of the Design Company for establishment of the special security zone at the site of «Akkuyu» NPP. The document was sent to the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, where it passed the process of agreement and approval. Representatives of the Ministry of Defense, General Staff, Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Turkey, as well as officers of the Design Company took part in the meetings of the commission for provision of the status of the special zone.

 

In the course of agreement of the document representatives of the state authorities paid special attention to adoption of the required actions in case of emergence of any natural calamities and emergency situations. In accordance with the law of Turkey «On closed military zones and security zones» № 81"2565 and as per the Decree of the Council of Ministers № 5081 the decision was taken on announcement of the territory of «Akkuyu» NPP site as the Special Security Zone. According to this status no man, excluding the staff of the facility, officers of the competent command and persons that got the appropriate permit, can stay, live in security zones and in the maritime space, where the special zone is also established. Any technical works at the distance of four hundred meters from external borders of the terminal facilities of the nuclear power plant shall be performed after agreement by the competent authorities of the corresponding ministries and agencies with the competent bodies of NPP. It shall be prohibited to manufacture, store, transport combustible and explosive materials at the distance of up to two hundred meters from external borders of the security zones of the plant.

 

Activity, implemented within «Akkuyu» NPP project takes place in cooperation and interaction not only with the Turkish Atomic Energy Agency (TAEK), power lines operating company (TEIAS), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), but also with the Turkish governmental agencies. Assignment of the status of the special security zone to the construction site of the first Turkish NPP indicates that the governmental authorities of Turkey pay the closest attention and demonstrate a high degree of interest in implementation of the Russian-Turkish project.

 

 

For information: «Akkuyu» NPP will be constructed in Mersin province (Turkey) on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The corresponding agreement is signed by the Governments of the Russian Federation and Republic of Turkey on May 12, 2010. NPP will consist of four power units with the capacity of 1200 mW each. The plant will be constructed under the serial project «NPP-2006» on the facilities of Novovoronezhskaya NPP-2 (Russia). Service life of «Akkuyu» NPP – 60 years.
